Arkham: A retrospective

arkham13I was one of the huge crowd that turned up on the Arkham Gaming Centre opening day. I was immediately impressed by the location and so was my son who found the waterfall particularly spectacular. I was concerned about the amount of Warhammer 40,000 being played, but the game tables were fantastic and the rest of the facilities pretty awesome. I soon found that the variety of supported games went far beyond Games Workshop products however.

Phil, Andy, Jamie, Ivor and Gary have made me feel very welcome and the atmosphere is always very friendly. On Saturdays when there are kids about the language is actively toned down but the sense of humour and vocabulary heads somewhat south in the more adult orientated evening sessions. The numbers are small but slowly building and this is only to be expected given short length of time the gaming centre has been opened. Wednesday’s are the most popular nights with roleplaying, wargaming, card games and boardgames all featuring. I cant make it down on a Monday as I have the tabletopnorth club to attend, but I see Fridays too are growing in popularity.

A Review of YellowCon

YellowConZombieGirlsThe first ever Yellowcon this year was a complete blast! I am only now posting on it as I am only now recovered from it. Man, I'm tell you, it was like the good old days of Con'ing. There was many... Many pints, the games were great, you met new people and on top of all that you got to see some amazing independent movies to boot. By Monday I was so wrecked that i could hardly move. So, the question I pose on this forum is 'Why were you not there?' That was the only thing wrong with it, not enough of the community turned up.

The schedule was set to have places for at least 80% more people than turned up, the craic was good and it ended up organisers would just play each other to pass time. It was not as if it was an expensive con. £20 on the door is what we expect from a con these days, in fact it is quite cheep, and that did not just pay for the games, It also got you in to all the movies from the Yellow Fever Film Festival, and I mean, Rhineland was Da' bomb.

Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid

YellowCon_LogoYellowCon 2010 opens its door tomorrow at Stormont Hotel in Belfast. There will be tons of gaming related goodness to be had including Call of Cthulhu, and Vampire roleplaying games and Secrets of the Third Reich and Firestorm Armada tabletop games. There will also be a Warhammer 40000 competition event on Sunday.

This event is fully supported by Tabletopnorth and many of the games at the event will be run by our own members. I really think this convention has the potential to be the largest gaming convention in Ireland so come and support something new and innovative.

A Grumpy Old Gamer ...rants on! Episode 3 PDF Print E-mail

Episode 3 - Fancy a quick game?

I have cheered up.  I am enjoying some excellent roleplaying in a game of Pathfinder at the club and some good computer gaming with Slitherine's excellent new release Battlefield Academy.  I am also really looking forward to Slitherine's next release, Commander the Great War.  Commander Europe at war was brilliant.  Several days spent without lifting my head from the computer. http://www.slitherine.com/

This is just an aside though as what I really want to talk about in this episode is my seemingly endless quest for a game that plays quickly. My game of choice is Field of Glory which takes at least 3 and a half hours, unless someone beats me sooner.  So when I get a chance I play it.  I enjoy roleplaying as a lighter diversion and it fits into any available time slot.  What I have been looking for in the last couple of years though is something I have started to call a "throw down game".  Even though I have been looking for several years without success I have only defined what it is I am looking for in the last few months.

New Venue arrangements from 30th August

Just a note to let everyone know about a slight change in our regular room booking arrangements in the Boatclub. Due to a new monthly event to be held at the Boatclub we will be making use of the upstairs restaurant on the last Monday of each month. This may turn out to be a temporary arrangement, however the Boatclub will be making additional lighting available in the restaurant to make the room more suitable for our use.

I do not foresee this change having a large impact on the club however I would respectfully ask members, and particularly the war-gamers to be aware of the limited amount of space available in the restaurant and to set up as close together as is comfortable. I will be monitoring our space requirements and will attempt to book additional space should we require it.

This arrangement will commence from Monday 30th August 2010 and will continue until further notice

Please comment upon this announcement in this forum thread.
